Why we were failed?

(May 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tissa Attanayake , Gen. Secretary of the UNP speaking to the media today (14 May)said , this Govt. has no capacity to do anything legal and honest ,whether it is administration, development or in the conduct of elections. It thrives only on murder, mayhem, corruption and malpractices. The Eastern Provincial Council elections bore all those hallmarks, he added.

At the last Presidential elections it entered into a pact with the LTTE paying them billions of rupees betraying the country, and won. This time it entered into an alliance with the TMVP, the LTTE breakaway group and scraped a narrow victory at the EP polls.

This Govt. created a record for breaching the laws most in a democratic election. Using State property, Govt. vehicles, intimidatory tactics, murder and mayhem. Can you imagine the President, he highest in the hierarchy of the country openly violating the election laws by making an election campaign speech on the eve of the elections? He asked.

The non implementation of the 17th amendment of the constitution by the President is to permit these violations, Attanayake exhorted. By all this the President has only achieved his ambitions together with Pillayan . But, what about the people who were expecting relief from the liberation accomplished by the Forces by their sweat and sacrifices after 20 years?

To beat this tyranny and lawlessness this Govt. and its Pillayan ally are spawning aimed at destroying the basic and birthrights of the people, the UNP has decided to take several measures in the interests of all communities and the country:

To file Court action against the unlawfully conducted elections

To whip up support of the International community against the despotic and dangerous trends in the county by apprising the Foreign Ambassadors and foreign missions.

A series of protest campaigns are to be organized around the country starting on Friday the 16th of May at 12.00 noon at Maradana opposite the Mosque premises.

The UNP is also to agitate for the re opening of Parliament which is now prorogued by the President without valid grounds, so as to debate these issues. All provincial Councils and District Councils are also to be alerted to these issues with a view to finding a solution to remedying the corrupt , tyrannical and un democratic activities of the Govt. he concluded.
