The lengthy discussion centred on the global food and economic crises. Views were exchanged as to how the countries in the region can move towards finding solutions. Specially, this discussion aimed at strengthening trade and economic ties among the countries, Singapore, India and Sri Lanka
It was the view of Wickremesinghe and Shanmugaratnam that a concerted plan must be systematically formulated to meet the basic problems and food crisis.
It was regretted that the free trade pacts beneficial to the country signed among the countries, Singapore, India and Sri Lanka when Ranil Wickremesinghe was Prime Minister have not been properly implemented by the subsequent Govts.
Shanmugaratnam pointed out that if this country is to successfully face the future, these agreements should be effectively implemented.
Matara District UNP M.P. Sagala Ratnayake, Financial advisor Arjuna Mahendran and Singapore High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Tan Ko Ho participated in the discussion.
