“Liberation Can Never Be Achieved By Assassination of Individuals”

“It’s evidently clear to us that nothing could be achieved by resorting to culture of violence that has been continuing right throughout the political history of Tamil speaking people.”

(April 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) “News of the assassination of Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, a brother Minister of the Government I represent and a sincere friend of mine, deeply shocked us” says Douglas Devananda, Secretary General of the EPDP and Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare in issuing a statement on the brutal suicide bomb attack on the Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.

“We share our deep sorrow with the aggrieved and shocked public over the loss of their eloquent Political Leader” the statement further adds.

In the past, when practical problems cropped up in our clamour for taking forward our political demands, there were many a time I disagreed with him and many an instance where I absolutely agreed with him.

We have lost a Minister who extended his full co-operation and political support when we proposed the implementation of the 13th amendment to the Constitution, as our first step towards political emancipation of our people and for ending up their sufferings.

Fernandopulle was well versed in all the three languages and was the one who bridged the divide among the Parliamentarians who belong to different ethnic groups.

There is no way one could reach one’s target by assassinating individuals. No one also could destroy the ideologies by killing Political Leaders who believe in such alternate ideologies.

It’s evidently clear to us that nothing could be achieved by resorting to culture of violence that has been continuing right throughout the political history of Tamil speaking people.

The political assassinations the Tigers are involved, only push back the political endeavours resorted to, towards attaining political solutions to the problems of the Tamil speaking people.

We the EPDP have strongly condemned such beastly activities carried out in the name of the liberation of the Nation that bring no results. We under no circumstances approve killings, by anyone.

People have today realized the incompetence of the Tiger Leadership who carries out killing of individuals and then justify them anticipating political gains and support for such killings.

Everyone has well understood today that the Tiger leadership cannot bring liberation to the Tamil speaking people by assassinating Political Leaders of the calibre of Minister Fernandopulle. In fact the Tiger Leadership has dug his own grave deeper by this brutal killing.

Douglas Devananda whilst expressing his deepest sympathies to the aggrieved members of the family, friends and relatives of Minister Fernandopulle and to the people of Gampaha District who elected him as their representatives to the Parliament, shares with them his deep sorrow.
