(February 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Parliamentarian of ruling SLFP Sripathi Sooriyarachchi , his driver and one of freinds were dies following an accident in Thambuththegama, Anuradhapura, few minutes ago.

The jeep in which he was travelling in from Anuradhapura to Colombo had lost control and hit a roadside tree.

Sooriyarachchi was rushed to the Thambuttegama Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

The driver of the vehicle, Priyantha Samarasinghe and a close friend of the MP, S.K.R. Silva (Chief Executive Officer of Isura FM), died on the spot.

Two others injured in the accident – Ministerial Security Division personnel identified as Somaratne and Nihal – were admitted to the Thambutegama Hospital.

Somaratne, who is in critical condition, was later transferred to the Anuradhapura General Hospital.

An attorney by profession, Sooriyarachchi was an ex-Navy officer. He was elected to parliament on the UPFA ticket from the Kelaniya electorate. He was later appointed Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training.

Mr Sooriyarachchi was a well-known politician who served as the deputy Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports. He created a stir in Sri Lankan politics when he was sacked as a minister by President Mahinda Rajapakse in 2007, after which he formed with Mangala Samaraweera a new political faction called the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana) Wing.)

However, “some of the government’s agents have been plotting to kill me,” Sripathi Sooriyarachchi, has been told his personal friends few days ago, according to reliable source in the SLFP(M).

"Sooriyarachchi was a former Minister in the Sri Lankan government who fell foul of the Rajapaksa Brothers regime," LTTE cyber mouth said.

"Last month, in an interview to an English Daily published from Colombo the parliamentarian had claimed that Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa was 'engineering an accident', "it accused.
