(February 22, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking to the Media today (22Feb) at the UNP Media unit, P.Harrison UNP M.P. for Anuradhapura asked whether this Govt. has honoured even a single promise or respected the Farmers of this essentially agricultural land of ours? He asked.The entire agriculture sector has been plunged into ruination because of the ruthless treacherous machinations of the Minister and his Rice Mill owners which are the cause of rice price hikes, and the abysmal predicament of the farmers, he added.The Govt. which promised to give fertilizer to the Farmers at Rs. 350.00 has, on the other hand plundered their profits, by its Minister and his relatives organizing ‘Mafia’ groups monopolising and controlling the rice market to the detriment of the farmers, while the President is turning a blind eye.
When the Ceylon Fertiliser Corporation Chairman, a henchman of the Agriculture Minister was accused of committing a fraud of over Rs. 500 million on fertiliser, the Govt. simply dismissed him when an investigation was demanded, and hushed it up. The Minister too admitted the fraud. How can such a Govt. which is fomenting corruption and racketing by Ministers think of the common man or the farmers?
Why can’t a Govt. which can introduce a control price on paddy, similarly control the price of rice? He questioned. The Police high ranking Officers have complained that they are even unable to do security checks on Lorries carrying rice allegedly of the Minister.
He urged all to unite to overthrow this fascist corrupt regime which has only concern for itself and its largest self serving cabinet of Ministers with a President who has no thought for the people except for his own selfishness oriented
