(January 21, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Surprise and shock. When LTTE cadre, Thambidurai Parameswaran and his accomplices were apprehended by the police yesterday, neighbours and locals at Puzhuthivakkam, a southern Chennai suburb were left speechless that hardcore members of a proscribed organisation had lived amidst them so long without creating suspicion.

The Puzhuthivakkam house where Thambidurai stayed on rent was monitored for several days before the special team zeored in on him.

The team kept the house in surveillance for three days beginning Pongal and arrested the LTTE man when he arrived early yesterday morning in a Chevy Tavera SUV. Various incriminating documents and cell phones were seized from his house.

His accomplices Joseph Alantin Regan alias Regan, Kesavan, Ganesh Anand alias Anand, Aravindan alias Kusalraj, Parris alias Parrisraj, Sudhanan alias Sudharsan and Akilan alias Padmaraj staying in and around Madipakkam and Puzhudhivakkam were also apprehended.

All of them were booked under the sections of conspiracy, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Foreigners Act. All the arrested were produced at Chengalpet court and lodged in Puzhal central prison.

TR Ganesan, 41, an office bearer of a local welfare association and a resident of Puzhuthivakkam said many like him were astonished that an LTTE operative had lived in their midst.

‘I think, the police need to rework their strategy to identify cadres belonging to militant groups when they arrive from Srilanka,’ he said and added that the arrest of people like Thambidurai made it clear that the ‘filter-process’ had a lot of leaks.

R Rathinadeep Singh, a long time resident of Bhagat Singh Street, in Puzhudhivakkam said the arrest will have an adverse impact on refugees seeking houses for rent in the neighbourhood.

‘A very sizeable Srilankan Tamils are living in Puzhudhivakkam and Madipakkam,’ he said and added that the police should increase vigil and find out if there were more men having links with the banned LTTE.

V Kuppan, a resident said owners let out their houses to Sri Lankans, lured by the huge money offered by them as rent.

Shocking revelation

When interrogated, some very shocking news tumbled out of the Sri Lankan Tamils.

They were allegedly assigned the job of eliminating Sri Lankan Tamil Minister Douglas Devananda, his assistant Yogaraj and Sri Lankan Tamil province former Chief Minister Varadharaja Perumal, who now is staying in India.

His daughter’s marriage is slated for next month at Delhi. It is said Thambidurai Parameswaran has befriended the ex-minister’s relatives along with whom he had planned to go to Delhi.
