“Steps will be taken soon for democracy” -UNP

(December, 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ranil Wickremesinghe, Leader of the UNP and of Opposition at the ‘Janahamuwa’ meeting of the people while collecting signatures for the public impeachment of the Rajapakse Govt.at Keerthi Abeywickrema Ground, Arangala village, Deniyaya electorate, Matara told the large gathering, very soon UNP will take measures to establish a Democracy that will be a solace and comfort for the now starving and suffering people of Sri Lanka.
This Rajapakse administration is only preoccupied with saving itself and its Jumbo Cabinet of 108 Ministers which is in the most precarious state now, after cheating the people on false election promises and pledges.

Unlike other Govt.’s., this Govt. has lost control of governance with each Minister doing what he wants heedless of the President or the people’s problems. Naturally, corruption, crime wave, lawlessness, economic decline, indiscipline and the whole rot has set in across the country, he added.

The Public impeachment signature campaign against the Govt. initiated by the National Congress has proved to be a roaring success. “I thank all of you on behalf of the Party for your kind invitation and encouragement.” Ranil said.

In every aspect and every sphere this Rajapakse administration has failed: whether it is war, economy, law and order, human rights and sovereignty of the people, security of the country, international relations, fiscal policies and governance. Indeed, now it is the people who are sustaining this white elephant of a President and his Govt., he exclaimed. It is the people who are taxed, burdened and subjected to all the hardships by way of price hikes, inflation and cost of living while the President and his Ministers are wasting people’s money on junkets and self nourishment.

The Govt. advances false excuses of World market prices and oil prices, but the stark truth is that the country’s revenue collected from the toils of the struggling masses are being drained away by fiscal bungling ,corruption and reckless wastages in Ministries and State sectors, he emphasized.

The President is fostering a favourable climate for these culprits by protecting them and saving them from punishment. Even when there are glaring heinous charges against his ‘men’ he does not take action. All Parl. Select committee probes are being shelved, he bemoaned.

How can this Govt. care for the people when it is channeling 40-45 % of the revenue towards repaying loans taken by the Govt. at exorbitant rates of interest without any concern for the country and people’s future ? He asked.
