Great victory for Media says Rupavahini staff - Aftermath Mervyn's Drama

"The staff of the Rupavahini locked Mervyn in the room where he hid to escape the backlash, and refused to release him even to the Police without him being handcuffed and taken away."

Inside Story of Mervyn's World Record

(December, 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ever since the Rajapakse Govt. came to power, media freedom erosion, intimidation and killing of journalists reached such dizzy heights that even Int. Media Institutions could not idly watch the dismal breakdown in law and order in the country, therefore, had to step in and warn the Govt. against such lawlessness which it was fostering in the country.

Govt. Minister Mervyn Silva has been among those many who were instrumental in these violences, murderous and marauding activities. Dec. 27th incident of storming into the premises of Rupavahini Corporation by Silva and his underworld thugs and attacking its News Director is not just an isolated incident. He had been engaged in similar thuggery and hooliganism with absolute impunity on several occasions: He was allegedly involved in intimidating the mother of the Judge hearing his son’s assault case. He was also accused as the cause of countless other disgraceful unruly conduct of assault and intimidation against the public. Indeed, the Minister’s bodyguard, the suspect in this case is himself a double murder suspect , a close ally of ‘Kudu Lal’ and is also known as ‘Kudu Nuwan’. This suspect a very close associate of the most Hon. Minister was earlier convicted on narcotics charges.

Although he has behaved as a law unto himself disgracing the country, the Presidential throne, the disciplinary code of the portfolio he held by his hooliganism and unruly behaviour, neither the President nor the Cabinet has taken any steps to take disciplinary action against him which had promoted the public opinion that they are Govt. backed.

What Mervyn Silva and those behind it fomenting hatred and violence did not realize was that ‘violence begets violence’ as what occurred yesterday in the Institution of the govt. itself. The staff of the Rupavahini locked Mervyn in the room where he hid to escape the backlash, and refused to release him even to the Police without him being handcuffed and taken away.

At last the Minister was taught a lesson and disciplined by the employees of the Govt. itself where the President and the Cabinet were impotent to take disciplinary proceedings.
